They had at least 8 children, one of whom was my gt gt grandfather Henry Smedley, a shipwright, who eventually moved his family to Poplar, London

Raine Longstaff - (Barnard Castle - Durham)
Seeking info Thomas Raine b.1803 who married ? Longstaff and had a son before 1831. Thomas was tried at York 17 March 1832 for sheep stealing. Sentenced to death, reprieved, sent to Australia arrived 1833. Records indicate his wife was living with her father Thomas Longstaff at Gallgate in August 1832. Is anyone decended from these people? Can anyone suggest how I could find out the first name of Thomas Raine's wife and also the name of their son. Thomas Raine remarried in Australia so I don't know whether his first wife died or divorced him. Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for information re: James Whitfield Hall born 1856 in Barnard Castle. In 1877 he married Elizabeth Miller born 1853 in Frosterly. Marriage cert shows respective parents as: David Hall and Christopher Miller. The offspring of James and Elizabeth:- John David(1877), Christopher(1879), Arthur(1883), Mary J(1887, Herbert(1889), John(1890), and Florence(1892) who married Robert Speed(1898)in Birtley in 1922. Any information about these families will be appreciated.

APPLEBY, WRIGHT, BAIN, McPHERSON - (Barnard Castle - Durham)
I am a descendant of Thomas APPLEBY b. c. 1816 Barnard Castle, Durham, England, to William APPLEBY and Margaret WRIGHT. Thomas was a Clerk and a Soldier serving in Antrim, Ireland. On 28 July 1835 at Carrickfergus; Antrim; Ireland; Thomas Appleby was convicted with Henry Mason of stealing on the 19th June 1835 watches, silk handkerchiefs, coats, silver spoons etc, the property of Ensign Lacy and Lieutenant Ferns. Both pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 7 years transportation. On 9 January 1836 at Cork; Ireland; Thomas Appleby was transported and sailed on board the vessel Surrey with 227 prisoners and 32 emigrant boys. The Surrey arrived Sydney, NSW, Australia on 17 May 1836. Thomas married Elizabeth BAIN, b.1823, Greenock, Scotland (daughter of James BAIN and Elizabeth McPHERSON), at Lanyon Station,NSW (now ACT), on 8 September 1841. They had a family of eleven possibly twelve children. Hoping someone may be able to help me discover information on William APPLEBY'S English family. Valma, NSW, Australia

My great great grandfather, William (Henry) Mackie, according to several census entries, was born in Barnard Castle, Durham in abt 1851. He married Alice Milner in abt 1879 and then lived in and around Wakefield, West Yorkshire until his death. Looking for information about a woman named Annie who married John George Tyson who is listed in the 1891 census as a sargeant in the Army. She was born at Barnard Castle Durham around 1856. She may be my great grandmother. I do not know her last name. In 1891 she is listed with these children: Frank H. W., Edith, John George, Henry, Frederick A, Ethel, Basil, Percy. I suspect she was the 2nd wife of John Tyson. The children are all shown as born in Malta, India, Singapore, etc. there may be a link to the Boardman surname somewhere in her history.

I am looking for information on my grandfather, I don`t know his name or where he was from, all i do know is he had some kind of relationship with my grandmother Ida Thompson of barnard castle, who had two children, Anthony Thompson and Anne Thompson, my grandmother may not of been originally from barnard castle, but she used to sell newspapers from a stand in barney, when I was a young child she lived in Baliol Street. Hopper Allan, Beamish. - (Beamish - Durham)
Looking for any information on Hopper. He was born 1879 at Heddon on the Wall, Northumberland. His parents were Robert and Dorothy Allan. Hopper married my grandmother, Frances Bendelow in 1921. They had two sons, Robert born 1922 and Alfred 1924. Frances died at the age of 36 in 1926.

John Coe - (Beamish - Durham)
My gt grandfather John Coe was born in Beamish(according to 1901 censu) c1844. He married(?) my gt grandmother Hannah Harrison but I have been unable to find any record of their marriage. They had 2 daughters, Sarah, born Hebburn 1883 and Lillie, born Heworth 1886. There was also possibly a 3rd daughter, Minnie. I have discovered a John Coe of similar age who birthplace is given as Hilltop in 1881 and 1871 Beamish, but I cannot be sure that this is the same person. This John married Elizabeth Hedworth in 1866 and was widowed by 1881. In both cases the occupation was given as Joiner. I would be grateful for any information which would help. Maureen

BELMONT GRANGE, nr Durham - (Belmont - Durham)
My grt grt grandfather was the Farm Bailiff at Woodwell House near what was Belmont Junction Railway station. The estate was owned by the Marquis of Londonderry. WILLIAM SUTTON was his name (1793 - 1860). He was married to BARBARA TWEEDY (1797 - 1862) and my grt granfather was their 9th child, CHARLES (1841 - 19xx). Does anyone have any ancient or modern history on Woodwell House, nearby Low Grange Farm, the railway station, or about this family?

My ancestor, Mary Ann Dine (later Patterson) was born at Wood Terrace, Bill Quay on 31st December 1897. By the time of her marriage in 1914, she had moved to Witton Gilbert.
