About email checks

Email checks and orphan entries
CuriousFox is a long term archive of research enquiries and older entries are usually just as valid as more recent entries.

Members are asked to keep their email addresses up to date but sometimes forget.

If we discover an email address is out of date or an email bounces we "orphan" the entries - the entry is moved to the orphans page for the village, and the envelope symbol is changed to grey. This often reminds members to update their email address so entries are often switched back to red or green boxes, meanwhile users can still see that someone somewhere is researching that particular topic and may come back to reclaim their entries, or that it could be worth adding their own entry on the topic.

How email checks work
If you ask CuriousFox to perform an email check we send an email to the member telling them that somebody is interested in one of their entries, wants to make contact, and has asked us to check their email address is still valid.

If we get a response, we let you know and update our records that the member is still active.
If the email bounces we mark the entry as an orphan and let you know.
If we do not get a response within a couple of weeks, it could be that the email address is still valid but the member did not respond, is temporarily absent, or that the address has been abandoned - in which case we tell you we did not get a response and update our records accordingly.

While an email check is in progress, the email check page tells you that a check has been started by somebody else. In this case, please check the entry again in a few days time.
