red mail Henry SMITH b.1850 Leigh
I am seeking confirmation that Henry SMITH b.1850 in Leigh, Worcs. is my maternal GGF. Henry SMITH'S father, Thomas SMITH b.1816 in Leigh, and mother, Mary SMITH(BATCHELOR) b.1818 also in Leigh, as was Mary's father John BATCHELOR b.1778, and possibly her mother Sarah STURCH b.1797. Research turned up a marriage record dated 1870 showing Henry SMITH married Catherine WALKER in Claines, Worcs. My GF was Thomas SMITH 1881-1916. His marriage cert shows his father as Henry SMITH, boatman, and deceased by the marriage date of 1902. I have the 1881 Census record showing Henry SMITH, age 30, master of canal boat no. 1383 with wife Catherine, age 29, at Tipton, also children shown as Henry (9), James (6), William (5), and Annie (2). The connection through village name may be a coincidence, but Thomas SMITH married Alice GREEN (MITCHELL) 1882-1916. She was also born in Leigh, so the SMITH and MITCHELL families must have known each other. I would be delighted to get confirmation of my findings but must admit I have my finger poised over the delete button. Thanks for reading my post. David. New Zealand.
