red mail Riverton
One of the few snippets of family law passed down to me is that we are the "O'Connells of Causeway and Riverton". The O'Connells of Riverton are mentioned in Basil O'Connell's "O'Connell Family Tracts" (1850) but he said he was unable to locate the actual townland. Basil relates a story of a Wake at Cahirciveen which was attended by the O'Connells of Riverstown, near Ballynabloun, in the Glen. The Irish name for Riverstown would be "Baile na hAbhann" which literally means Town of the River and would be pronounced Ballynahown. and the closest townland to Ballyabloun of a similiar name is Ballynahow which is an O'Connell townland. In the Ordinance Survey (Griffiths) Census in the 1850's Ballynahow is listed as being in Killemlagh parish but in an earlier census commissioned by Daniel O'Connell M.P. (The Liberator) in 1835 the corresponding townland in Killemlagh parish is named Riverton.
