red mail Murder of George Durham
George Durham was my maternal great-grandfather. I would be interested in any additional information - source of details? Newspaper item? Also any info. about George Durham's wife Janet, ms Mowat, whose father, William Mowatt (sic) was born in Orkney, and also information about Thomson Moore.
red mail Murder of George Durham 1901
George Durham died 8/9/1901 aged 52. He was married to Janet Durham. They had a number of children, amongst whom was my paternal Grandmother, Mary, who married George Allan at 42 Madeira Street, Leith around 1918. I believe that George Durham was murdered and am trying to find out more about him. George and Janet Durham were friendly with John Elder of Coats Place, Coatdyke (they may have been related in some way). I would be grateful for any information or advice on how to obtain more information. Many thanks.
red mail Murder of George Durham 1901
I have now managed to find out more information. George Durham was assaulted on 31 August 1901 and died on 9 September 1901 from his injuries. James Miller was arrested and tried for culpable homicide, robbery, at Glasgow, convicted and sentenced to 5 years penal servitude. George Durham left a widow, Janet, a son, also George, and daughters Maggie (marrried Thomson Moore), Catherine (married William Hendry), Janet (married John Elder), Jane (married James Pearce), Marion (married Archibald Rankin), WilliamIna (married Robert Robertson) and Mary (married David Allan). I have been able to find children born to the Hendrys, Elders, Rankins and Allans. I know that WilliamIna and Robert Robertson had no children. George Durham jr. (who married Mary Marion Lightbody) also had children. I would be interested in hearing from anybody who thinks that they know of or are related to any of the above. The Pearces, Robertsons and Allans all lived in Edinburgh - the rest of the family, as far as I know, remained in Lanarkshire. George Durham jr. married at Penicuik but returned to Lanarkshire. George Durham sr. was buried at New Monkland.
