red mail Mount Vernon, Glasgow
Anciently known as Windyedge (or variations of)in many historical documents. The land was purchased from the trustees of John Pitcairn by a merchant called Robert Boyd in 1741 and renamed to Mount Vernon by him in the spring of 1742.It is thought the new name was in honour of the famous Admiral Edward Vernon. Many accounts of this name change cite a George Buchanan who purchased the estate in 1756 as being the person who changed the name, these accounts are entirely false as the Cess Tax books record the name as Mount Vernon in 1742 when Boyd owned the property.
