red mail Thomas
My 2 x G Grandfather, John Thomas, was born in Marshfield in either 1838 or 1840 to John Thomas and Elizabeth (surname unknown). All the census records point to John Snr being a farm labourer except 1861 when he worked at the Coach & Horses Inn (still there). On John Jnr's marriage record he says his father was John LLoyd, ship carpenter. I can't find any Parish Records for Marshfield or Peterstone so I haven't been able to unravel this conundrum. Does anyone know of the existence of parish records for this area?
red mail 1841 Census for Peterstone Wentlloog
I have had confirmation from The National Archives, that the 1841 census returns for Peterstone were never sent to them, (then called The Public Record Office) when all the records were transferred to them. So it seems they were missing sometime ago. My ancestor William James was a farmer who lived at New House, in Peterstone in 1841 (assumed) and 1851. He married Ann Thomas of Cardiff in 1842 when he was a widow. I do not have his wife's first name but believe they had a son Ivor born 1840 in Peterstone and who is living with the Davis / Davies family who were Grocers in Merthyr in 1851 and in Marshfield in 1861. William James born 1812 marshfield died between 1851 and 1861. In 1856 his father Daniel James of Marshfield, made a will naming Emma, Cordelia, Ellen and Ivor as the children of his late son William. It is worth people knowing that there are several Peterstone pre-1858 wills freely available on the website of The National Library of Wales which can be searched by place as well as name. There are several wills from Peterstone Wentlooge residents.
