Martha Retallick (b 1834), daughter of William Retallick & Catherine (Kitty) Pill
My 3x great-grandmother was Johanna RETALLICK born 1836 in St Columb Major. Her parents were William RETALLICK (1800 - 1856) & Catherine (Kitty) PILL (1797 - 1868). Johanna migrated to Australia in 1857. Johanna's siblings were Elizabeth (Betsey) born about 1830, William born about 1832, Martha & Mary both born about 1834. The family is together on the 1841 census. On the 1851 census only Martha and Johanna are still living with their parents. On the 1851 census Elizabeth (as Betsey) is a servant in the house of John Tonkyn. It appears Elizabeth married in 1860 in Plymouth, Devon to Thomas Baker who was a ship steward. She is widowed by 1871 and dies in Totnes, Devon in 1914. She does not appear to have had children. On the 1851 census William is an apprentice living in the house of Samuel Couch. He marries Mary Ann Walkey in St Austell in 1854 and that same year migrates to Australia. He dies in Victoria Australia in 1902. William & Mary Ann had one daughter I have had some contact with one of her descendants. There is a Mary Retallack age 18 as a servant in the house of Richard Tinney in Tregavethan who may be Mary as the Tinney family originate from St Columb. Mary is in Plymouth in 1861 as a house servant in the home of George Tulley. It appears she marries in 1868 to a widower named Phillip Burley and dies in Plymouth in 1875. The 1871 census seems to show Phillip Burley's wife as "Emma". Mary does not appear to have had children. On the 1861 census Catherine (as Kitty) is living with Kate Retallick who is Johanna's illegitimate daughter. Kate migrates to Australia in 1868 after Kitty's death. It appears she may have been passed off as Johanna's sister. I have not found Martha past the 1851 census. Any information about Martha would be gratefully received.

red mail Arscott
I am descended from John Arscott who was road warden of St Columb Ma.in about 1708. And his son James (1720-1805) who lived at "Rosedinnick", was a millwright and landowner and has a tombstone in the churchyard. Property named in his will includes "Carter's tenement" and "Hoskins' or Doncaster tenement". I can't find out where John came from. There was a prosperous Arscott family in Devon though.
