red mail LISTER family at Willington, Co. Durham.
I am trying to research more about a Sarah LISTER, nee COATES who married a John LISTER on 28th May 1849 at Richmond, Yorkshire. Sarah was possibly born at Skelton, Yorkshire in 1828 and had at least 2 sisters - a Mary COATES and a Jane COATES. Their parents are thought to be John and Elizabeth COATES (nee Stainbank). In 1851 Sarah and John ('Jackie') LISTER were working as schoolmaster and schoolmistress at a school in Willington, Co. Durham. By the time of the 1861 Census they have moved to Tudhoe, Co. Durham and Sarah's husband is described as a 'schoolmaster and collector of rates' and they have 3 or 4 children. My family ancestors - TAYLOR family of Whitworth, Spennymoor and Ferryhill thought highly of these two people and family rumour had it that John LISTER was instrumental in providing a village school somewhere in the locality. Possibly at Willington or Tudhoe, or Spennymoor or their surrounding areas. I have been trying to find out if there is a family link between Sarah LISTER and my maternal grandmother, Bertha Annie COATES (birth registered as Bertha A Mullen with father John Mullin and mother Mary Ann on the parish record) who was born in 1879 and whose father was shown as William COATES on her marriage certificate. John LISTER was born 1818/19 and died 8th Aug. 1877 at Edinburgh having had an operation. His wife Sarah was still shown on the 1881 Census as living at Tudhoe, a widow. I would be glad to hear from anyone with extra information relating to these LISTERS, their ancestors and their descendants. Thankyou.

red mail Francis McIntyre/McEntire c. 1861
Francis moved to Willington from Brancepeth with his wife Bridget (nee Dolan) after their (first?) daughter Mary's birth. As far as I can tell, both were from Ireland. Interested to hear from anyone else with links to this family. More children followed and included my great grandmother, Bridget, born in 1861. Was employed as a labourer at the time of the 1861 census.
