Entries around
Mary An Walker
Following a previous entry regarding the above person I can now add some further details which I hope may lead me to her background. As before she appears in the 1851 census age 17, born Bellingham Northumberland, working as an Inn servant at the Angel Inn, Crossgate, Durham city, before marrying Joseph Smith at Durham St. Giles on May 31st. 1852, where her father is shown as William Walker, cordwainer. I am still unable to find any details of her birth in Bellingham around 1834, but there is a Mary Ann Walker, illegitimate, born 25/1/1834, bapt 2/3/1834 at Whitfield Holy Trinity, father shown as John Walker, a collier of Ellinborough Cumberland, mother Ann Carr, a single woman of Whitfield . The 1841 census for Bellingham shows a William Walker, cordwainer, age 65 living with his family and an entry for a Mary Gordon, relationship not shown. There is a record of a Mary Ann Gordon bapt. 26/10/1834 Bellingham, father Robert, mother Isabella. Could it be that the Walker family 'adopted' Mary Gordon, either officially or for some other reason, and was brought up by them to regard William as her father when she married ?? After marrying Joseph Smith, they went on to have 10 children, one of whom is shown on a genealogy site having the mother's name as Mary Gordon Smith ! I would have thought that Bellingham was a relatively small place in the 1830's and to have more than one William Walker, cordwainer, was too much of a coincidence. Maybe too many facts could muddy the water, but I hope someone may be able to confirm what happened, where and when. Thanks, Brian

Mary Ann Walker
Can anyone help please with the background to Mary Ann WALKER, born appx 1834/35 in Bellingham (according to census returns). I cannot locate her in 1841 , but by 1851 she is in Crossgates, part of Durham City, shown age 17, working as a servant at an Inn. I believe she went on to marry Joseph SMITH in May 1852 in Durham, Mary being shown as a minor, her father William a cordwainer. If my research is correct Mary died March 1884, age 52, and was buried March 7th. at Holmside. Anything on her birth, details of parents and siblings etc . or any other relevant info. greatly appreciated, thanks. Brian
