red mail Honeyford family from Bessbrook
My grandmother Lucretia Honeyford was born 23/9/1886 in Bessbrook, County Armagh to parents James Honeyford and Margaret nee Reid. She had siblings Edward Benjamin b. 21/4/1882,James Annesley b. 30/1/1885, Mary Georgina b. 19/11/1889 and Gregory b. 12/6/1892. The family were Quakers and lived above the Friends Meeting House in Bessbrook as caretakers for many years, although their father James was also a painter /decorator.The main industry of Bessbrook at the time was the linen mill. Lucretia was a dressmaker and sailed for Australia via London on board the " Benalla" in 1922, reportedly to get away from " the troubles" in Northern Ireland. She married a widower, James Holdsworth in Sydney, N.S.W in 1923 ( James' parents were originally from Queensbury in West Yorkshire, England ) and had my father James Annesley b. 1924. She died in 1968, never losing her broad Irish accent. I have visited Bessbrook twice and it is still a pretty village close to Newry. For some time it was the site for the largest heliport in Northern Ireland. I met cousins whom I had not known existed and was fortunate enough to be shown through The Friends Meeting House by the then caretaker Ted, who was the only one old enough to remember my grandmother. Anyone related to the family is welcome to contact me to swap info. Regards Janice
