Has anyone heard of a Joseph Gubbins,(put himself down as a Gentleman) He had a son called John Gubbins born 1834 in limerick, and went to England and married Mary McGrath in 1854. They settled in Dockhead Bermondsey, and had seven children, one of them being my great gran Catherine Gubbins. I know the family up to 1901, but would love to know just who was Joseph Gubbins, and who his wife was to help me along with my ancestors in Limerick. red mail Robert A. Smith of Rathkeale Rathkeale, Rath Caola, and Parish
Robert Alexander Smith, born Feb. 26, 1826, enlisted as a private in the 97th regiment the day after his 15th birthday. His younger brother Marmaduke, age 14, enlisted the same day. According to army records, they were born in Rathkeale. Catholic parish records for this period in Rathkeale apparently no longer exist. No Robert A. Smith appears in index of Church of Ireland records. So I have reached a brick wall; would appreciate any advice on tracing this family further back. Robert married Susan Marchant in Malta in 1846. His was an up-from-the-ranks success story. He went on to earn a battlefield commission in the Crimea and retired as a captain. Two of his four sons became captains of the White Star Line.
