Tower Hamlets is the name of the the administrative borough formed in 1965 but with much older origins. The name was used for the Tower division of the county of Middlesex, covering not only the present borough, but also part of the present-day London Borough of Hackney. The Constable of the Tower of London had special jurisdiction over the area from the 16th century until 1889. Inhabitants of Tower Hamlets were originally required to provide yeomen for the Tower of London.and covers the area known at the "East End" of London.
The name was also used for a electoral purposes from 1832 to 1918.
The modern borough includes the following areas.
Bethnal Green (part on the Borough of Hackney)
Isle of Dogs
St George in the East
